Bocconotti are a traditional Italian biscuit from the beautiful region of Abruzzo. These shortbread style, filled biscuits have a resemblance to #mincepies but are filled with Confettura di Uva Montepulciano, cinnamon, chopped almonds, dark chocolate and cooked grape must.
The Confettura di Uva Montepulciano, called #Scrucchjiata in local dialect, is made from 100% Montepulciano d'Abruzzo wine grapes with no added sugars. The texture is dense and the flavour is very rich with a slight bitter edge. When mixed with the aforementioned ingredients, it is the perfect festive treat and is best served with a strong espresso or a glass of mulled wine! There are a variety of recipes out there and I use one from the Head Chef of the Italian Embassy in London, Danilo Cortellini. His recipes uses Extra Virgin Olive Oil rather than butter for the pastry. You can find his book in most good bookshops including Waterstones.
